The Grand Tour (or A Subject Librarian’s travels around the North West!) by Zoe Collyer, CILIP North West Awards Co-ordinator

Over the last month or so I have spent a lot of time on trains as a result of the attending some great training opportunities.

When I say 'Grand Tour', I have to admit to mainly travelling to Liverpool and Manchester, but I seem to have visited both cities more in the last couple of weeks than I have in the last 2 years!

First up, Manchester, for the JISC Connect More event at Manchester United football ground. (JISC provides digital solutions for UK education and research). Myself and a colleague set out in the largest car that our University could provide and bravely set off up the M56.  I drive a Peugeot 108, so being presented with an SUV is always an interesting prospect. It feels a bit like being given the keys to a tank! Taking the wrong junction onto the M60, then having to battle across Manchester through hoards of cricket fans, we make it to the event just on time.
The event was a great chance to explore how our team can incorporate digital strategies to enhance our students’ experience, and we came away with lots of ideas. We also got the chance to see the stadium itself, a bit of an eye opener for me as I’ve never been to a football ground. I still can’t quite believe that people are paid to wash the seats!

Ditching the tank, the following day I take the train to Liverpool for the NoWAL Conference (North West Academic Libraries), a slightly more relaxing journey. Volunteering at the event I met colleagues from across the North West and chaired some great sessions on the conference theme of exploring and supporting diversity in academic libraries. Again, there was lots I can take back to put into practice, and the themes of the talks and discussions gave plenty of food for thought.

Third event in a week takes me to Salford, again by train, for the ALDinHE Regional Symposium (Association for Learning Development in Higher Education).  There we had the opportunity to play, with workshops based on the theme of creativity and play, and it is interesting to see how competitive librarians and information professionals can be when faced with a locked box challenge.  A great event and the opportunity to share experiences and ideas with colleagues. Back to Manchester to squeeze in an evening trip to see the Book of Mormon!

After a week’s holiday it’s back to travelling and two trips in a week. Back to Salford University to have a look at their UniSkills module and finally Manchester for the CILIP North West committee meeting. Now all I have to do is unearth my desk from all the stuff that has been piled onto it and do some real work!

Now all I have to do is unearth my desk from all the stuff that has been piled on it and actually do some real work!

Careers Support Conversations Programme: Job Searches and Applications - additional resources

Thank you to everyone who attended our first Careers Conversations event - we hope it is the first of many and welcome any and all feedback on the programme. Please keep an eye on our newsletter , social media and website for upcoming events.  Please find below a summary of the major points discussed during the session. Underneath this summary, please find links to useful resources for the job searching and application process for several library and information sectors; The session began with a discussion about where individuals typically look for job listings and analysis of some of the bigger providers. Along with the resources listed below, possible locations for job listings include noting listings on recruitment agencies and applying directly, looking at organisations that are being refurbished or expanded upon as they may account for new roles, and the information and archiving teams within unions. It was noted that it is worthwhile looking at roles outside of one's chosen ...

My experience of the CILIP Conference 2025 by Sarah Kaye

On Wednesday 2 nd July, I travelled from Cheshire to Birmingham for a day at the CILIP Conference 2025. After registering and being given a map and a timetable, I entered the exhibition room which was pulsing with excitement. People were hugging each other and shaking hands, waving from across the room and running to say hello with huge smiles on their faces. This was obviously an opportunity for colleagues and friends to come together and celebrate librarianship as well as for librarians like me to network and build new connections. After pouring myself a cup of coffee, I spoke to the people on the Better World Books stand and the BorrowBox stand. These were both brands I recognised due to Cheshire ELS working with them. Although I knew about what those companies did, it was lovely for me to ask questions, learn more about different project they were undertaking and some of the history of the companies. I walked away feeling more confident and uplifted. The opening comments by Lo...

“A Grand Day Out”

CILIP North West “A Grand Day Out” What Happened? Just before Covid hit in 2020, I began the process of working towards my Chartership. Lockdown gave me lots of opportunity to do all sort of online training and reading. But I struggled with reflective writing; I just couldn’t get my head around how to do it. So, I kept going with development activities and sort of hoped that if I ignored it, reflective writing would just go away. Needless to say, it didn’t. Finally, I felt I had done enough to submit my MCLIP but the pesky reflective writing was hanging over me. So when I saw there was a session on reflective writing at a forthcoming CILIP CPD day, I knew I had to attend and slay the demon! So What? To be honest, I hadn’t paid much attention to the programme for the day beyond the reflective writing session. So it all came as a bit of a surprise, and a very inspiring one. We started with a session about ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence, led by Tim Leonard, of B...
